Why Video Files Get Too Big — And How to Fix It
Modern smartphones record video in stunning quality. A 4K video from an iPhone 15 Pro can run at 400MB per minute. A 60-second clip is already 400MB — far too large to send over WhatsApp (which caps at 16MB for standard users), attach to an email (typically capped at 25MB), or upload to most platforms quickly.
Video compression solves this by re-encoding the video at a lower bitrate — essentially reducing the amount of data used to represent each second of video. Done correctly, the visual difference is minimal or unnoticeable, especially when watched on a phone screen. Done too aggressively, you get visible quality loss. 💡 WhatsApp tip: WhatsApp's 16MB limit is for standard accounts. WhatsApp Business allows up to 2GB. If you're sending to a WhatsApp group, use High compression. For direct messages on WhatsApp Business, Medium is fine.
Low vs Medium vs High — Which Should You Choose?
Low compression is for when quality is the priority — archiving family videos, uploading to YouTube, sharing with a client. File size reduction is modest (~25%) but quality is excellent.
Medium compression is for most everyday uses — social media posts, web uploads, sharing with friends. Reduces file size by about half with minimal visible quality loss on phone and computer screens.
High compression is for when you need to hit a specific size limit — WhatsApp, email, or a small upload portal. Quality does drop noticeably on large screens but looks acceptable on mobile devices.
